2. a state or feeling of deep distress or misery
Calamity comes from Middle French calamite which came from 14th century Latin calamitatem meaning "damage, loss, failure; disaster, misfortune, adversity," Though the origin of calamity is obscure, Latin writers associated it with calamus meaning "straw."
