Notorious \noh-tawr-ee-uhs\ adjective

1. widely and unfavorably known

2. publicly or generally known, as for a particular trait

Dating from the 1540s, for "publicly known," notorious comes from Medieval Latin notorius meaning "well-known, commonly known," which came from the Latin notus for "known." Negative connotations for the word arose 17th century from frequent association with derogatory nouns.
