Diet Tip #5: Hit the Vending Machine

You have a love-hate relationship with the vending machine: You love the convenience; you hate how you feel after visiting it. Consider these strategies for minimizing the damage.

1. Err on the side of protein. Go for something that will offer some slow-burning satisfaction. A nut bar or even peanut M&M's aren't exactly health food, but they're better than a bag of Doritos.

2. Read the label and eyeball a portion. As soon as you grab your snack, figure out how much of it would amount to 150 calories, and offer the rest to the office food mooch.

3. Ditch the trail mix. It might seem like the healthiest option, but the bags often contain about 400 calories, enough for three people.

4. Try the microwave popcorn. Look for Orville Redenbacher's 100 Calorie SmartPop when you're stressed out and want something crunchy.

5. Get baked, not fried. When you simply need chips, get the baked versions.

6. Call the vending-machine company. Call the vending contractor (the number is usually on small plaque on the machine) and ask them to stock specific items that are a little healthier—Gnu Flavor & Fiber bars, Pop Chips, Fiber One bars. (Or avoid future bad run-ins with the vending machine by stocking your desk with a carton of the same.)
