Brown Swiss Breed

The Brown Swiss was originally used for beef production, draft work, and dairy production. In the US, the Brown Swiss is a dairy cow.

In the US, the Brown Swiss is second only to the Holstein in total milk yield.

The Brown Swiss has higher milk solid content, however.

The Brown Swiss has a docile, unexcitable nature.

The cow's color may range from a light brown to a dark brown.

The muzzle is always banded.

These cows have large fuzzy ears, a black switch, a straight face, and a stocky build.

The Brown Swiss may be one of the oldest cow breeds.

Originally from Switzerland, the Brown Swiss is found in many countries.

In the US, the Brown Swiss has been bred to have a different conformation from the original Swiss cow.

Consequently, the US Brown Swiss and the Switzerland cow are considered two different lines within the breed.

The Swiss cow is called Swiss Brown or Braunvieh.
