Not Your Typical Pet
While most people would be grossed out by the discovery of a caterpillar in a head of broccoli they’d just purchased at the supermarket, Sam Darlaston, a U.K. radio host, decided to keep it — and six others — as a pet.
Darlaston was shocked at finding the first caterpillar while getting ready to prepare some broccoli he’d purchased at the local supermarket on June 11, but grew to love the little critter he adopted as a pet and named it Cedric.
The supermarket refunded him the money for the broccoli, but, in a surprise twist, Darlaston found even more in the broccoli heads he got in exchange.
“The broccoli I’d got as a replacement contained 5 more,” Darlaston tells HuffPost. “And then a third broccoli belonging to my housemate had another one! So one became seven caterpillars overnight!”
He decided to keep them all, explaining, “I’m a firm believer in not harming any animals or insects if possible and I just sort of knew what I had to do after googling how to keep a caterpillar.”
Darlaston named the others Broc, Olly, Carlos, Croc, Janine and Slim Eric.
Like any pet-owner, however, Darlaston became melancholy as his buggy brood grow up and eventually spread their wings and fly away -- literally -- as butterflies.
“I’m just happy at least one of us gets to go out during these times,” he joked.
